Industry Reform
The Queensland Water Industry is currently undergoing one of the most difficult periods in the state’s history with ongoing demographic changes and skill shortages being overlain by removal of subsidies, forced amalgamation of Councils and industry restructures initiated by State Government. qldwater is supporting and representing its members through this period and into the future.
Water industry reform in South East Queensland will take some years to stabilise. Legislative changes including state-wide demand management measures, fluoridation and compulsory drinking water quality standards and monitoring reflect the maturing water industry and the extension of national reforms to all Water Service Providers in Queensland. Reform continues nationally, with Queensland likely to be the last remaining State with a large number of local government-managed water businesses. This makes Queensland unique and can also strengthen the industry so long as there are appropriate mechanisms for collaboration and transparently demonstrating due diligence.
